First thing I want to say is good morning to everybody reading this right now. The greatest day in the year came and it was opening day. It was a great day and my team the Yankees did win so it was a good day in that way. BTS was also very interesting on day 1 if I do say so myself. I have a couple of questions and they are Why Didn’t Home Run BTS open yesterday and why didn’t Odyssey open so we can see what it is all about? First time that Home Run BTS didn’t open with the start of the season and we still have to wait with baited breath to find out what Odyssey is all about. Anyway here is the recap of my picks I mentioned in my last blog.
Miguel Cabrera– First of all let me just say that I screwed up. I said to stay away from Miggy as maybe he would have the Spring Training incident in his head and wouldn’t concentrate on the game of baseball. He was facing CC and I thought that number against CC was a fluke. Miggy went 1 for 2 and continues to hit CC well. Miggy has that Spring Training incident behind him and has baseball on his mind.
Joey Votto– Votto was a Pick Of The Day yesterday and I said that he could have a bad day or a good day and he did get one hit on a Home Run so he did have a good day for anybody that picked him.
Martin Prado– I said Prado had the best shot to get a hit as he was hitting Hernandez great. That all ended yesterday. Prado went 0 for 4 and he was the first one mentioned that had an 0 for on Opening Day.
Any Angel– I mentioned Hunter specificially and sure enough he did come through against the Royals with 2 hits and one being a Home Run. Hunter was one of many Angels to get hits just like I mentioned so you could of chose any angel except Trumbo and you would of succeeded.
Picks To Avoid Recap
Any Yankee– I also said not to pick any Yankee as they didn’t hit Verlander well. It was history and Verlander made two mistakes yesterday that cost him the game. Tex and A-Rod were two of the ones that got one of the 5 hits. Jeter, Cano and Posada all had 0 fer days. I was half right to stay away from Yankees against Verlander.
My Pick Recap
Chipper Jones– I chose Chipper Jones based on his hot spring and the fact that he is back to his old self. Sure enough in the first inning he came through with a double and my pick looked fantastic. He got another hit later in the game so 2 hits to start my BTS year is fantastic. Chipper was a lock and sure enough he came through.
Picks Of The Day For April 1st According To MLB
Shin Soo Choo– First of all it mentions that Choo is hitting .385 against a great pitcher Buehrle. That is true but if you look at the numbers you will see Choo is not a good pick for April Fool’s Day. Choo is hitting .272 against all lefties over the last 3 years. He’s hitting .277 during the day in that same time period. He is even hitting .297 during the month of April. The only thing he has going for him is that he is hitting .313 at home over the last 3 years. Choo wouldn’t be a good pick today against Buehrle based on those facts.
Travis Snider– Why would anybody put him on the Pick Of The Day is mind blowing to me? Why would anybody pick him is even more mind blowing. Snider has one thing going for him today. He hits Pavano very well. He is hitting .455 against him in his career so that is a pretty big number. Snider I would stay away though. Snider is hitting .257 against righties, .265 at home, .269 at night and a horrible .203 in the month of April. That is all over the last 3 years. You want to take a shot be my guest and I bet you will be disappointed.
Omar Infante– Infante is somebody who is shaky. He does start at second for Florida now but anything can and will happen in BTS. He has fantastic numbers across the board but nothing I would do a double take on. First he is hitting Pelfrey at a .533 rate. He is bound to have one bad game against Pelfrey somewhere down the line so why wouldn’t it be tonight on Opening Night? Over the last 3 years though he is hitting .312 against righties, .307 at night, .323 at home historically and he is hitting .315 in the month of April. Hitting over .300 across the board so he could be a great pick or a could be a dud. Think about this. He is hitting .340 in Florida’s home Stadium over the last 3 years.
Buster Posey– Posey could be a great pick today. He has only been in the majors since last May so the pitchers haven’t really had a chance to see him yet. The longer he plays the more he will get figured out. He has good numbers against Billingsley though. He is hitting .385 against Billingsley in his short career. If you break down the numbers you make the call on Posey. He is hitting .299 against righties in the last 3 years, .309 at night, a smoking .346 on the road and he doesn’t have an April average yet. He can’t hit the Dodgers as he is hitting .283 against them in his short career.
Hanley Ramirez– A lot of streakers will pick Hanley based on his name alone. I wouldn’t as he isn’t very good against Pelfrey at all. He is hitting .283 against Pelfrey in his career so far. He could be a good pick tonight as well. He is hitting .323 against righties over the last 3 years, .313 at home, .317 at night and .304 in the month of April. The only thing Hanley has going for him is he hits the Mets at a .330 rate so he might get a hit tonight but not against Pelfrey.
Ichiro– Ichiro is the most popular pick in BTS history. He is a slap hitter and for that he gets a lot of base hits. Be wary though as Ichiro has killed more streaks in the past than anybody else. Ichiro is a very good hitter and I will be picking him down the line but not tonight. He is hitting .400 against Cahill in his career. He is killing righties over the last 3 years as he is hitting .330 against them in that time frame. He is hitting .317 on the road, .325 at night over the last 3 years. There is one number that scares me though and I’m staying away for now. Ichiro is hitting .299 over the last 3 Aprils. He is hitting over .300 in his career and only .299 in April. He could have a good April this year and that number will go up but historically he has a bad April based on his standards. He kills Oakland every time he plays them at a .325 rate over the last 3 years so maybe this is the start he needs.
Josh Hamilton– Hamilton is another person who everybody is going to jump on because of the year he had. Hamilton I wouldn’t argue with at all. He is hitting .313 against Lester in his career so it’s not mind blowing numbers. Against all lefties over the last 3 years he is hitting .291, he is .332 at home, .269 during the day and .288 in April. Not an extraordinary pick at all. He hits Boston at .337 which means he hits everybody else better than he does Lester.
Troy Tulowitzki– I like Tulo I really do but he isn’t somebody who I would pick tonight in BTS. He is going to be picked a lot because of what he did last year but again he isn’t the best pick. Tulo is hitting .250 against Kennedy in his career so not g
reat at all. Tulo is hitting all righties at .287 rate over the last 3 years, .309 at home, .319 during the day. The number that sticks out. He is only hitting .218 in the month of April over the last 3 years. He struggles in April and gets hotter as the year goes on. He is even hitting .249 against Arizona over the last 3 years so I would avoid if you can.
Carlos Gonzalez– Carlos Gonzalez is my guy for today. He doesn’t have great numbers against Kennedy but everything else works out for me. Gonzalez is hitting .286 against Kennedy in his career so far. Gonzalez is hitting great over the last 3 years. He is hitting .307 against all righties, .328 at home, .339 during the day and .350 in the month of April. He is red hot the first month and turning into one of the best players in the game right now. He is also hitting .351 against Arizona over the last 3 years overall. Gonzalez I’m predicting to have a great year this year and do better than he did last year.
Pick To Avoid
Evan Longoria– You may say I’m crazy or I am out of my mind but Longoria is not a good pick at all today or this whole weekend. He is hitting .200 against Guthrie in his career so he gets 1 hit every 5 times he faces him. Evan is hitting .281 against all righties in the last 3 years, .286 at home, .284 at night. The only good thing he has going for him is he is hitting .335 in April over the last 3 years. After that he gets cold the rest of the year. Evan is even hitting .269 against Baltimore in the last 3 years. There are better picks out there so I would stay away.
Potential Pick For Friend
Marlon Byrd– Marlon Byrd had a fantastic Spring and was roping the ball all over the field. Will it translate into regular season success? I don’t think so. He is hitting .000 against Correia in his career with 10 ABs against him. Byrd isn’t the best against righties over the last 3 years. He is hitting .289 against them, Byrd is also hitting .282 at home, .283 during the day. The only number he has going is he is hitting .313 in April. He might come through but not against Correia.
I want to write about HR BTS and Odyssey but neither one is open yet and I wonder why. I’m going to end this here so thank you once again and read me every day.
